About Us

Raul Hernandez opened his first restaurant on September 7th, 1962 with his wife, Josephine.  Using Josephine's kitchen stove and the recipes developed in Raul's own home, the legendary cuisine was born.  A machinist by trade, Raul was able to design his own, unique machine with the help of his employer, Townsend Engineering.  Ray and Andy Townsend were instrumental in providing the know how to help Raul build his dream.

With faith, family and friends, Raul's Mexican Food was welcomed and warmly supported by the Des Moines, Iowa community; allowing Raul to serve the state of Iowa for 43 years through his restaurants.

Raul never settled for less than the absolute freshest ingredients for his customers.
Raul's motto "Mi Casa es Suya", was lived every day through his presence.  He never met a stranger and humbly strived to give his "family of customers" the very best in food and service.

Sadly, personal and economic stress closed both of Raul's restaurants in 2005.

During the 2009 West Glen & Four Mile Farmers markets, Raul's famous food was reintroduced to the Iowa community and sold out each market day!

Overwhelming community requests and support has brought back our beloved restaurant.  Raul's passion to serve will live on.

You will find Raul's recipes are unique. Each and every item/dinner ordered is made per order, one at a time, as Raul's refuses to serve anything less than the best. The "assembly line prep" in which you receive your meal within minutes (all the same sauces & meats for every dinner)  used by many other Mexican restaurants, simply does not apply to Raul's because of the variety of meats, sauces & time we put into preparing each, individual dinner fresh for you!

Mi Casa es Suya!  Thank you for the honor of your patronage!
